EES 5010 Geoscience Seminar - 4/26/2024

125 TROWBRIDGE HALL - 3:30 - 5PM

Presenter: Dr. Michael Eddy - Assistant Professor - Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana

Title: Hunting for Fossil Magma Reservoirs in the Geologic Record

Abstract: Petrologic constraints suggest that high-silica rhyolite is segregated from partially crystallized silicic magma reservoirs within the Earth’s upper crust. Such an origin requires that the remnants of these magma reservoirs fully crystallize to form plutons and that some granitoid plutons must be the complementary cumulates from which rhyolitic melt was derived. Yet, identifying clear volumes of rock that represent discrete fossil magma reservoirs within granitoid plutons has been challenging. I will walk through examples where our research group has studied granitoids to better understand the relationship between granitoids and rhyolitic melt.
