EES NEWSLETTER
WEEK OF AUGUST 29, 2023
EES 5010 Geoscience Seminar – 9/1/2023 – 3:30PM, 125 Trowbridge Hall
Presenter: Dr. Francesc Pérez Peris, University of Iowa - Dept of Earth & Environmental Sciences. Post-Doc, Visiting Scholar
Title: From the Fezouata Shale to the Ibex area: new insights from the Tremadocian (Lower Ordovician) and the Ordovician Radiation
Abstract: Placed between two major biodiversification events, the Cambrian Explosion and the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, the Tremadocian (Lower Ordovician) is a key time period for understanding the early evolution of animals. Paleontological data from two Tremadocian outcrops, the Fezouata Shale (North Zagora, Morocco) and the Ibex area (Western Utah, USA) are combined here. While the Fezouata Shale provides information about soft tissues not usually preserved in the fossil record, the Ibex area provides one of the most outstanding trilobite records in the world. Major changes in trilobite anatomy and diversity are identified, providing new information about the transition between the Cambrian and the Ordovician ecosystems.
