WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 19, 2023
EES 5010 Geoscience Seminar – 9/22/2023 – 3:30 – 5:00P, 125 Trowbridge Hall
Presenter: Bill Neumann, Core of Engineers (Rock Island, IL)
Title: The application of near surface geophysical methods to environmental, geologic and geotechnical engineering investigations
Abstract: This presentation offers an overview of near-surface geophysics and emerging capabilities, encompassing a range of methodologies such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Reflection Seismic, Refraction Seismic, Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW), Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI), Electromagnetic, and Magnetic techniques. While some overlap in their capabilities exists, each method is uniquely suited to specific investigation goals and environmental conditions. A key aspect covered in this presentation is understanding the physical properties that each technology evaluates, as this information plays a vital role in selecting the most appropriate method or combination of methods for a given project. Considerations such as limits of resolution, penetration depth, and susceptibility to local signal interference (noise) are essential factors in project planning. The strengths and limitations of each approach are discussed, in an effort to provide insights for potential practitioners. Multiple case studies are presented that highlight real-world applications, showcasing how these geophysical methods are effectively employed in different environments with different investigation goals.
