Overview

The program manager will manage the Geosciences Program in the CSGB Division of BES in Germantown, MD. The program manager will determine scientific focus and direction of the research portfolio, prepare calls for proposals, organize independent peer reviews, recommend funding allocations, organize Principal Investigator meetings, serve as a liaison on committees, and assess scientific progress of the research portfolio. The program manager conceives, justifies, plans, initiates, manages, and coordinates all aspects of the program that includes a diverse range of fundamental experimental, theoretical, and computational research in geochemistry and geophysics.

The BES Geosciences program supports a broad range of fundamental research projects including but not limited to analytical geochemistry, experimental and theoretical geochemistry, rock physics and fluid flow physics, hydrology, geophysical imaging of rock and fluid properties, hydrogeophysics , biogeochemistry, and application of AI/ML and computational modeling to the simulation and study of geochemical and geophysical processes. Geochemical research emphasizes fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanisms and rates associated with geochemical processes, focusing on molecular-mesoscale aspects of minerals and interfaces and on the molecular origins of critical element/isotope distributions and their influence on migration/separation/fractionation pathways in the earth, ranging from weathering environments to magmatic/hydrothermal systems. Geophysical research focuses on new approaches to understand subsurface processes that characterize the evolution of fractures in the upper crust, particularly when associated with enhanced geothermal systems and CO2 mineralization and storage.

GEOLOGIST IV - KENTUCKY GEOLOGICAL SURVEY - UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY, LEXINGTON, KY

The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS), a publicly supported research center within the University of Kentucky (UK), is recruiting a Geologist IV. Key position responsibilities include leading a field team to collect methane concentration measurements from orphaned oil and gas wells, examine and analyze gas samples collected, and digital database entry of measurements.

This position will be responsible for personnel and grant management. This position will manage projects which includes supervision of project teams, routine budget tracking, and project reporting. This position must collaborate and communicate with KGS staff, other UK researchers, project stakeholders/sponsors, professionals, and landowners to enable successful completion of project. This position will publish reports and present findings at professional meetings.

Required Education: Ph.D. in Geosciences

Knowledge/Experience of Gas and Brine Geochemistry, Hydrocarbon Geochemistry; 5+ years of state issued driver’s license; competent in use of Microsoft Excel

TENURE-TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN SEDIMENTARY GEOLOGY - GEOLOGY DEPARTMENT - COLORADO COLLEGE, COLORADO SPRINGS, CO

Colorado College is hiring a tenure-track assistant professor in sedimentary geology to join the Geology Department starting in August 2025.

We seek an individual who uses quantitative methods and the rock record to explore topics of societal relevance. We welcome researchers studying: 

(1) extreme events, such as abrupt climate transitions, flooding, mass movements, extinction events, etc.;

(3) carbon cycle through time. 

Well-qualified candidates will have a demonstrated interest in teaching and a commitment to conducting research with undergraduate students. The successful candidate will teach introductory-level courses in earth systems and earth history, an upper-division process-oriented sedimentology course, and advanced topical and/or methodological electives in their area of expertise. Strong candidates will present a research agenda that complements the existing disciplinary expertise in the Department and/or the College.

SENIOR PROFESSIONAL STAFF - GEOSCIENTIST/GEOCHEMIST - NUCLEAR WASTE TECHNICAL REVIEW BOARD - ARLINGTON, VA (HYBRID POSITION)

The incumbent serves as the Senior Professional Staff (Geoscientist/Geochemist). The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board offers unique opportunities to address complex environmental challenges of national and international importance while working on a team of professionals from a variety of scientific and technical disciplines.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Geoscientist/Geochemist will:

  • Maintain extensive knowledge of corrosion mechanisms; evolution of the geochemical environment that includes processes such as sorption and diffusion that impact the barrier performance of engineered and natural barriers; nuclear waste form degradation; radionuclide release and transport; and surface complexation and other mechanisms that impact the transport of radionuclides in different geologic media.
  • Evaluate DOE activities related to monitored retrievable storage facilities and deep geologic repositories, including developing technical siting criteria, site characterization, performance assessments, and development and deployment of laboratory-based and field-based experiments investigating geochemical topics.
  • Familiarity with laboratory and field experiments on radioactive material transport, numerical models for reactive transport, and coupled process models.
  • Provides the Board with detailed information on developments in both the private and public sectors that can affect the direction of DOE's repository development program, and analyzes the technical, scientific, and regulatory effects of those developments.
  • Provides authoritative technical advice and guidance to the Executive Director and to Board members on complex technical issues related to key decisions made by DOE. As requested by the Executive Director, the incumbent drafts correspondence and reports in response to inquiries from members of Congress and their staff, state and local governments, Federal agencies, Tribes, and the interested public.
  • Ability to conduct technical or scientific investigations in areas of assigned responsibility, gather technical data, analyze the data, and write succinct reports based on the analysis.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of DOE efforts to implement its spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste management program by attending DOE meetings, reviewing DOE documents, and interacting with DOE and contractor employees working in the program.
  • Analyze DOE implementation plans and meet with appropriate DOE representatives to ascertain the status of DOE's implementation of approved Board recommendations.
  • Interact with scientific groups and committees, other Federal agencies, Tribes or state and local governments to assist the Board in evaluating DOE activities and developing Board recommendations. When appropriate and as assigned by the Executive Director, the incumbent represents the Board at technical meetings, in meetings with interested groups, and in interactions with members of Congress and their staffs, and representatives of the Office of Management and Budget and the Government Accountability Office.
  • Assist other professional staff members in executing their duties when assigned to do so.

Education: Should possess an advanced degree (preferably a doctorate) in geoscience or geochemistry or a closely related field and at least eight years of professional experience.

Foreign Education: In order to demonstrate that education completed in other countries meets the qualification requirements, applicants must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by an organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs, and that such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. program. Otherwise, proof must be provided to show that full credit has been given for the courses at an accredited U.S. college or university.

Qualifications

  • A comprehensive knowledge of the mission, functions, responsibilities, and objectives of the Board.
  • Superior communication, synthesis, and writing skills, including the ability to accurately summarize Board deliberations and prepare draft reports based on those deliberations in a timely manner.
  • Ability to analyze information from multiple disciplines and communicate the results of the analyses clearly and effectively in written reports and presentations to Board members, Congress, and Department of Energy senior management, as appropriate.
  • Familiarity with programs of other agencies and the legislation affecting them, including the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Transportation, and Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.
  • Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team, including Board members and staff, and to assist with reviews being performed by other staff members.
  • The necessary skills to organize teams, manage meetings, and supervise the production of reports and other documents.
  • Familiarity with the U.S. program, programs in other countries, and international organizations involved in managing and disposing of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste.
  • Potential for effective participation in teams with respect to planning, coordinating, and executing projects.
  • Relevant project experience may include participation on interdisciplinary teams, project management, and workshop coordination

Offered by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, AMDS is a 3-month long career development experience to learn the development of a hypothesis-driven robotic space mission in a concurrent engineering environment while getting an in-depth, first-hand look at instrument design, mission life cycle, costs, schedule & the inherent trade-offs.

Engineering students close to completion of their MS degree, science & engineering, Doctoral candidates, recent PhDs, Postdocs, & Junior Faculty who are U.S. Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents are eligible. POST DOCTORAL SCHOLAR - UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY - LEXINGTON, KY

The University of Kentucky (UK) Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, in cooperation with the Kentucky Geological Survey, has an opening for an innovative postdoctoral scholar with experience in paleolimnology and near surface geophysics. This research position will work primarily in the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of CHIRP seismic reflection profiles and GPR data, as well as sediment cores (geochronology, multi-proxy analyses) from extant and paleo-lakes. International fieldwork is required for the position; experience with coring will be considered a plus. The post-doctoral scholar will support NSF-sponsored research on Lake Tanganyika (eastern Africa) and in central Appalachia. The scholar will have the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse team of experts and build an independent research program that examines the influence of hydroclimate change on biodiversity and aquatic ecosystem function. Opportunities exist for the selected applicant to mentor students and developing learning opportunities (courses, workshops, etc.) for the UK earth science community. The position includes support for research-related travel and conference attendance.UK is located in Lexington, a vibrant city of 300,000+ people in the heart of the scenic Bluegrass region. We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate for advanced electron microscopy-based investigations of layered natural and synthetic clay minerals. This position relies on high-resolution electron microscopy imaging, diffraction studies and analytical investigations of low-Z and beam sensitive materials. Our systems include natural clays, micas, and related synthetic 2D platforms. The successful candidate will be involved in comprehensive dynamic characterization electron beam-sensitive materials, including the characterization in hydrated state, under controlled environment, and as a function of external stimuli. We are seeking applicants with hands-on experience using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and focused ion beam (FIB) techniques.

The candidate must hold a PhD in physics, materials science, chemistry, mineralogy or a related discipline. Ph.D. must be completed prior to the start date.

You will have demonstrated proven track-record in the areas of advanced electron microscopy, as well as understanding of experimental scanning transmission electron microscopy and complex data processing. Your experience with in-situ techniques will be a plus, as well as understanding of the nature of interactions of electron beam with the specimen and critical dose and dose-rate, and a solid publication record is important. Your skillset and creativity will enrich collaborative projects. You are a motivated, quality-oriented individual capable of working with minimal supervision, and have good written and oral communication skills. You have demonstrated experience working successfully as part of a team in a collaborative and multidisciplinary scientific environment. You are able to communicate effectively with collaborators.

We are seeking a MS student in Environmental Science at the Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), beginning January 2025. The successful candidate will conduct research at the Geological and Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory (GERSLab) at UTC. The research will focus on developing models to estimate water quality in the Tennessee River using remote sensing technology. 

Basic qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Hydrology, or a related field.
  • Experience in GIS/Remote Sensing technology.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in coding (e.g., Python, R) and data analysis.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in using water quality measuring equipment and water quality data collection in rivers.
  • Proficiency in spatial analysis using ArcGIS Pro and Python.

  • Experience in working with imagery acquired by Landsat satellites.

AMDS is roughly equivalent in workload to a rigorous 3-credit graduate course, requiring an average effort of 10-12 hours per week. Participants act as a space science mission team during the first 10 weeks of preparatory webinars, with the final culminating week mentored at JPL by JPL’s Advance Project Design Team or Team-X for refining the mission concept design & presenting it to a mock review board of NASA Center experts.

POST DOCTORAL SCHOLAR - UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY - LEXINGTON, KY

The University of Kentucky (UK) Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, in cooperation with the Kentucky Geological Survey, has an opening for an innovative postdoctoral scholar with experience in paleolimnology and near surface geophysics. This research position will work primarily in the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of CHIRP seismic reflection profiles and GPR data, as well as sediment cores (geochronology, multi-proxy analyses) from extant and paleo-lakes. International fieldwork is required for the position; experience with coring will be considered a plus. The post-doctoral scholar will support NSF-sponsored research on Lake Tanganyika (eastern Africa) and in central Appalachia. The scholar will have the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse team of experts and build an independent research program that examines the influence of hydroclimate change on biodiversity and aquatic ecosystem function. Opportunities exist for the selected applicant to mentor students and developing learning opportunities (courses, workshops, etc.) for the UK earth science community. The position includes support for research-related travel and conference attendance.UK is located in Lexington, a vibrant city of 300,000+ people in the heart of the scenic Bluegrass region. Lexington and UK offer excellent cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities, as well as easy access to Louisville and Cincinnati. This is a limited term appointment for two years with the possibility of renewal for up to three additional years, contingent upon performance and availability of funds. We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate for advanced electron microscopy-based investigations of layered natural and synthetic clay minerals. This position relies on high-resolution electron microscopy imaging, diffraction studies and analytical investigations of low-Z and beam sensitive materials. Our systems include natural clays, micas, and related synthetic 2D platforms. The successful candidate will be involved in comprehensive dynamic characterization electron beam-sensitive materials, including the characterization in hydrated state, under controlled environment, and as a function of external stimuli. We are seeking applicants with hands-on experience using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and focused ion beam (FIB) techniques.

The candidate must hold a PhD in physics, materials science, chemistry, mineralogy or a related discipline. Ph.D. must be completed prior to the start date.

You will have demonstrated proven track-record in the areas of advanced electron microscopy, as well as understanding of experimental scanning transmission electron microscopy and complex data processing. Your experience with in-situ techniques will be a plus, as well as understanding of the nature of interactions of electron beam with the specimen and critical dose and dose-rate, and a solid publication record is important. Your skillset and creativity will enrich collaborative projects. You are a motivated, quality-oriented individual capable of working with minimal supervision, and have good written and oral communication skills. You have demonstrated experience working successfully as part of a team in a collaborative and multidisciplinary scientific environment. You are able to communicate effectively with collaborators.
